backing up video to Google Drive or other cloud drive.

by sighthoundian » Wed Sep 23, 2015 5:17 pm

Hello,
In my preferences I have chosen the destination to archive video as my Google Drive folder which will get synched to the Google cloud. However when Sighthound deletes files in that folder to make more space, Google drive keeps the deleted files in its trash folder and I have to manually empty the trash or I will exceed my Google Drive space and it won't synch. I have searched to see if there was an auto delete the trash for Google Drive but don't think there is one. Has anyone used Google Drive or other Cloud storage that doesn't have this empty trash problem? Your help is gratefully appreciated.

You probably want to use the "export to local folder" response to only store certain matching clips rather than having your entire data directory backed up by google drive. Files created by responses such as this and ftp are never deleted (they are assumed to be for archival purposes)

Ok thanks Ryan. I ended up just plugging in an external USB hard drive and using that as the video archive.

I also looked into this for offsite backup requirements.

Making the storage location the google drive will work.
But unless you have a lot of storage, read paid, you may not get much footage saved.

"export to local folder" is the way to go.
Google drive can run scripts.
I found a script to auto delete files after a set number of days.

Or run a local directory management script to do the same.
