Preventing false alerts and limiting motion recording?

by sorka » Sun Aug 09, 2015 3:53 pm

I've been waiting for years for something that would detect people even if it's simply using a human ratio boxed algorithm.

However, I'm getting tons of false alerts from plants waving in the background. Some of these could be mitigated if there was a way to set masks like most video surveillance applications have for filtering out moving plants and such. There doesn't appear to be a way to do this. I can set an area of an arbitrary complicated polygon but no way to set individual disconnected regions to ignore.

I've mitigated it slightly by setting the person detection time several seconds but that's only cut down about 2/3rds of the false human object detection events.

Is there anyway to adjust the sensitivity of the object detection?
Is there any way to prevent recording on any object when I've only asked for human object detection?
Is there any way to mask out regions to prevent detection of waving plants as objects or humans?
Is there any way to limit post recording so that files don't get so large?

Hi sorka,

Is there anyway to adjust the sensitivity of the object detection?

There currently is not away to adjust the detection. If you could send an image or video with an example of a common false detection you are seeing I'd be happy to give specific recommendations for configuring your rule. If you do not wish to share the image of your scene on these public forums you can email us at [email protected]

Is there any way to prevent recording on any object when I've only asked for human object detection?

All video is recorded regardless of motion detection, but only video matching your rules that have the "Mark this clip to be saved on: My computer" selected will be kept. You can specify how long you'd like to keep temporary video (video that doesn't match your "save" rules) in the storage preferences. More information on how long video is saved, how to manage disk space, and how video clips are divided up can be found here: https://www.sighthound.com/support/managing-your-video

Is there any way to mask out regions to prevent detection of waving plants as objects or humans?

It's hard to give advice on configuring your rule without seeing an image of your scene or an example video, but in most cases you can eliminate false detection by plants by drawing a region around the area that you wish to monitor and use "inside my region" or "on top of my region". This article has some examples of advanced use of regions which may be useful in your case.

Is there any way to limit post recording so that files don't get so large?

You can limit how much space is used for videos in the storage preferences by selecting Options from the Tools menu (Preferences from the Sighthound Video menu on Mac OS).
