Android mobile problems again

by dradb » Wed Jul 29, 2015 6:58 pm

Once again, I can't access Sighthound from my mobile.

A port test on PC shows that 8080 is OPEN. (Static IP set up.)

WiFi, Internet working fine.

It won't work even with Windows firewall turned off.

External address shows "Attempting to connect" on Sighthound on PC.

Lots of reboots, etc, to no effect.

Mobile shows "There was an error communicating with the server....". Remote address checked, OK. Login ID and password same as on PC, checked OK.

HELP PLEASE. This is diving me nuts.

Hello dradb,

I have a few questions to better understand your setup:

* Is your Android device connected to the same network as the computer running Sighthound while attempting to connect or is it connected to the cell network? If you're connected to the same network are you using the Internal address? If you are not connected to the same network, have you set up port forwarding on your router so that the internal address is forwarded to an external address?

* Can you connect using the Android device's web browser rather than the mobile app?

* If you click the Internal address link in the remote access tab of Sighthound Video are you brought to the web server in your computers browser?

Regards,

-Devin

Strangely it started working fine. I assume it must have been an internet connection problem.

Devin,
You might be interested that the final part of fixing my problems was to disable uPnP on the router. It was allowing other apps to grab the static IP I'd set up for Sighthound.

Devin, I am having the same issue
When I try to set up remote access and also use the 8080 port (yes, I've checked it and my router has it open) the Local address is fine, the Internal address is fine but the External address always says "Attempting to connect..."
No matter what i do this will not change. I also tried to disable the UPnP and it didn't work to correct the problem.

Hello roadeo,

Did you create a port forwarding rule on your router for Sighthound Video? If not I'd be happy to provide instructions for your specific router if you could provide the manufacturer and model number of this router.

The external address will not populate in the remote access tab if Sighthound Video was unable to open the port in your router, even if you successfully forwarded the port yourself. Once you have manually forwarded a port you should be able to connect to Sighthound Video by using your networks external address with the forwarded port number (external.ip.address:port). You can find your networks external IP address by going to http://www.whatsmyip.org/ from a computer or mobile device on the network.

Hi Devin,
I did open a port successfully (tested it) and when I sign into the sighthound app using my external IP address and the port it still comes up with an error : "There was an error communicating with the server. Check the settings and try again."
I'm using the correct name and password and the External Address is still not coming up.

I wish there was a number i could call to resolve this issue

Please send me the router-open port info so I can see if I missed anything.
I have a Lynksys router model WRT160Nv2

Hi Roland,

You can find the port forward guide for your router here: http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... tguide.htm

You will want to follow the directions for forwarding a single port and use the following values:

Application Name: Sighthound Video
External Port: This can be any number, though I recommend using the same port number as the Internal Port
Internal Port: Use the port number listed in the remote access tab in Sighthound Video
Protocol: Both
To IP Address: Use the IP Address of the computer running Sighthound Video

Once the rule is saved you should be able to connect by entering your networks external address with the forwarded port attached (external.ip.address:port). Keep in mind you may not be able to connect to this external address while connected to the same network as Sighthound Video as many routers do not allow you to connect to externally facing addresses from within the same network. I'd recommend testing the external address using a smart phone that has WiFi disabled.

Regards,

-Devin
