Sighthound records EVERYTHING to disk in a series of contiguous files and when one of your rules is met due to motion, then a database is updated to point into those files about 5 seconds before the motion was detected to about 15 seconds after. This way, you can see a few seconds of what happened before the motion was actually determined to have occurred. Otherwise, all you would see is the person just "there" in the middle of the room and not know if they came from the left, right, fell in from the ceiling or popped up through a trap door in the floor, or maybe just beamed-in from the transporter room on the Enterprise.
After 48 hours (or whatever number of hours YOU set in the "Tools/Options|Storage" menu selection) all the data that is outside of the Start and End times in the database are deleted to free up space in the storage system for more video. If YOUR selected allocation of space on the storage system gets full (same menu selection), then the oldest saved-by-rule video will also get deleted to make room for more.
You can set the storage time to just 1 hour if you wish.
I have mine set to 720 hours (30 days) so that if someone is seen on my front porch while I am off gallivanting the world for 3 weeks, I can look at the non-rule saved video from other cameras to see where that person came from (car parked in street or driveway, or if they walked up from somewhere else). I don't want to "save by rule" all the traffic on my street or even in my driveway (people use it to turn around a lot!) nor all the cars that park in front of my house (family across the street parks there and he and the kids come and go at all hours of the day and night) so I have no rule to save that video from the cameras that face the street, but by saving all video for an extended time, when someone actually comes onto my porch, I can see what has happened elsewhere (both before and after).
Sighthound is very good at keeping the video file space all cleaned up so there is plenty of room for more. And if, perhaps, some video that you don't want to be saved at all, even for a moment, you have the option of deleting it within the "Search" mode of Sighthound.
