24/7 recording

by 105437 » Mon Jul 06, 2015 5:42 pm

Is it possible to have Sighthound record/save video 24/7, not just the motion detection clips. Thanks

It does save video 24/7, but only lists the clips where motion was detected... AND it only keeps the non-motion video and the non-rule video for the period you specify in the "Tools|Options" "Storage" tab, (default is 48 hours I think), or until you run out of room on the disk. Non-motion video and non-rule detect motion is deleted first, then clips 'saved by rule' will get deleted to make room for more video to be saved.

Video really eats up disk storage space! If you want to save all video permanently, then you need to find a way to copy the video files to massive storage someplace else. You can do it manually from the "Search" mode but that is quite tedious since it will only save 2 minutes of video at a time.

To view "all" the video, you can do so by selecting just one camera from the list and then play to the end of one clip, and then click "Play" again to proceed to the video that comes after. Or click somewhere in the time line below the video window. If that video is not saved by a rule or because there was no motion, then in the list of clips the highlight will just be a thin blue line between entries. It can be only a few seconds of video or many hours if there was no motion for that long. You can export any 2 minute segment of that video by right clicking on the video window and selecting "Export" from the context menu that appears. Of course you need some storage media to hold it and that can get full pretty quick. Of course, you also have to do this BEFORE the "keep all video for xx hours" parameter has expired (that 48 hours default or whatever you change it to).

You can, though it goes against the advice of the techs at SightHound, go to the video folder and copy files directly from there. I think the files are broken into 15 minute segments just for convenience of the software but all of them together are one contiguous video. You pick what files contain what you want to save and copy the files like you would any other file on the disk. It is advised that you DO NOT delete these files manually. I have done so and SightHound gracefully recovers from the loss of data that it knows should be there, but then I am a brave individual (or a fool, depending on your viewpoint) and am willing to accept any adverse consequences I cause by playing out side the rules... and I have shot myself in the foot a few times, but not too badly.
