Sighthound crushing my computer

by SuperFreq » Sat Jun 20, 2015 4:20 pm

I am currently running:
2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB RAM
and I am running 6 foscam H.264 cameras at 1280x960 15fps
It is crushing both the RAM and the CPU.
I have seen this:
https://www.sighthound.com/support/system-requirements
and I am wondering what will give me the most bang for the buck reclaiming some CPU/RAM?
Drop the resolution or frame rate? I don't want to have a bunch of crappy video that is worthless if I need to identify someone, so I have been dropping the FPS to try and fix that. I have also dropped the quality to 1Mbs on all.
Does it perform better on a Windows machine? Do I need to build a separate machine just for this?

This was a very expensive piece of software, it seems like the performance is not where I would expect it for a price tag like this.

If you drop your bandwidth on the cameras you'll also want to drop the bandwidth that sighthound saves the video as. It's an undocumented switch, contact support for that information.

Reducing camera resolution will help with both CPU and RAM. Dropping framerate on cameras will help slightly with CPU.

Hello SuperFreq,

I'm sorry to hear you're computer is becoming overburdened. It looks like your CPU simply cannot handle running 6 cameras at 1280x960. I'd recommend lowering all of your cameras by at least one resolution size and see how it runs. Keep in mind you will want to lower the resolution on the cameras configuration page to save the most processing.

In the System Requirements article we have an example of
4) A Windows 8 laptop with an Intel Core i3-3227U 1.90GHz CPU and 4gb of ram uses approximately 50% of the CPU monitoring 5 VGA (640x480) cameras
. I'd recommend comparing your CPU against this one to get an idea of what resolution you will be able to run. This website has a compare tool which will show you the performance http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu ... Hz&id=1861

We've designed the Windows and Mac versions to be as close to identical as possible. Processing, analyzing and re-encoding several high resolution streams can require quite a bit of system resources, regardless of how well we optimize the software, which we are continuing to do.

We do encourage users to first download and try the free 14 day Pro Edition trial before purchasing a license to ensure that our software will meet their needs.

Regards,

-Devin
