Recording Help

by starratt » Fri Mar 20, 2015 7:43 pm

I have both an indoor camera and an outdoor HD camera. Both record video and the indoor is very accurate in detecting people. The problem I have with the outdoor camera is that bugs are attracted to the infra red lighting of the camera and the bugs attract spiders. The problem is that the moving web or the spiders themselves trigger the software to record even though I have selected to record only people. I clean and spray the area around the camera a couple of times a week, but that isn't enough. Some days I have to delete between 200 and 500 clips (which takes a long time) to keep my hard drive from filing up with useless video.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can tweak the recording settings?

Hi starratt,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing trouble with spider webs. We're actively working on our algorithms to make them better than ever, if you have any sample videos you'd like me to pass along to our computer vision team let me know and I'd be glad to do so.

There may be some rule combinations that help eliminate the trouble you're seeing, but it's a bit difficult to say without seeing the scene. I've heard that a little wd-40 can deter many types of spiders from entering a given area, though I haven't tried that myself. There are also a number of spider repellents available which may help keep them away from your camera.

Regards,

-Devin

I've got a great clip that shows the web and the spider. This after cleaning the camera area 1 day before.
The clip is about 4mb and is too large to upload.

Hi starratt,

You should be able to email it to [email protected], if you wish to do so.

I sent 2 video clips to you via email. I had 1252 to delete yesterday. Some of them were "Temporary". How long will those temporary files stay on my hard drive?

Hi starratt,

Video not saved by a rule (temporary video) will remain for the length of time set in the storage settings in the Preferences (Mac) or Options (Windows) menus. If you only care about video that matches your rule I'd recommend setting this option to a low number.

For more details on how long video is saved, how to manage disk space, and how video clips are divided up, please see this article: https://www.sighthound.com/support/managing-your-video

-Devin
