Encoding video?

by nicopolous » Mon Mar 16, 2015 10:58 am

Hi

I am looking to purchase Sighthound for a multi-camera set-up, but have a question:

I'm using HD cameras and so as I add multiple cameras, CPU usage is a concern. Does Sighthound encode the video streams when motion is detected, or just record the stream "as is"? The cameras I have are H264 720p.

If there is encoding going on, the CPU overhead will be too high for me. However, is it just the motion detection and dealing with an incoming 720p stream that uses CPU time?

Thanks for any help,

Nick

Hi Nick,

You can see a few example systems and CPU usage at the bottom of https://www.sighthound.com/support/system-requirements

The best test though would be to download Sighthound Video and try it out. The application includes a Pro license for 14 days so you can try all parts of the app and live with it for a bit to see if it meets your needs. If you have any questions or trouble during your trial let us know and we'll be glad to help.

Best,

Thanks for the information Ryan.

I've started using the trial and I like the software. However, it's going to need a powerful server to monitor and record the 10-15 HD cameras I have.

Also, the size of the files it is recording seem very high - and most importantly are much bigger than the incoming stream from the camera.

Is there a way to just record the incoming stream from the cameras without re-encoding them?

Thanks

Nick

Hi Nick,

At this time there isn't a way to adjust the video settings in such a way to adjust the file size other than changing the resolution that Sighthound Video saves video to. We may consider adding settings like this for more tech savvy users in the future but we have no plans to do so in the immediate future.

Regards,

-Devin
