Hi 303,
Renewing your support and upgrade subscription is of course optional as Devin noted, and can always be done at a later date. Your license is valid forever for all 2.X versions that will ever be released. One of the nice things about the support & upgrade subscription model vs. the typical randomly priced upgrade model in software is that you know from the start what the maximum possible cost would be down the road if you choose to upgrade.
I bought a piece of software for ~$80 and nine months later had to pay ~$60 to upgrade to the next major version (which was forced for Yosemite compatibility). With Sighthound Video hopefully it's comforting to know that it would be six years before major version upgrades (if you opted to pay for them) would meet the original purchase price, vs just a year or two with most others. Another bonus is that you can always 'catch up' at any point in the future, vs. the normal limited upgrade window with most other software.
I certainly understand the desire to know what lies ahead. We've added quite a bit to the application in the past year, even just in 2015 these include ONVIF support and IFTTT integration. We've re-written the networking component of our video library from the ground up, which you have a preview of and will appear in the next release. Similarly, we're currently spending a great deal of time rooting out stability, compatibility, and performance improvements which while not flashy in release notes take a great deal of engineering effort and I hope will be appreciated by all when they're ready. Also of note is the incredible amount of work and research going on in our computer vision lab.
I hope that you feel satisfied with the value you've gotten from Sighthound Video for your original purchase price. If you're hesitant to renew your support and upgrade subscription now you can certainly wait until a 3.0 (or 4.0 or 5.0) version of the application is released and judge whether it contains a similar cost to value ratio for your usage or not.
Best,
- ryan
