object recognition at night

by camera_kat » Thu Feb 26, 2015 10:44 pm

Sighthound recognizes absolute nothing in night mode with a Vivotek IB8369 running at 1080p. Are two megapixels not enough for pattern recognition at night?

I am using some el-cheap-o web cams at 640x480 resolution (one third of a mega pixel) and they are absolutely lousy in the dark... one scene in particular is illuminated by a street light 1/2 block away, producing a faint orange glow in the upper right corner, but SH will alert me to someone walking their dog at 1 AM. I can't see them until they are almost directly under the street light, but when reviewing the video, SH starts showing the bounding box while they are still in the center of the scene and I cannot see them at all.

I have another camera that only produces a decent image at twilight. At night the scene is totally black and in the day time it is a total white-out. It is strange that sometimes SH will detect motion in those scenes, but will sometimes miss a car passing in the street at twilight when the scene is perfectly clear to me looking at the screen.

It has more to do with contrast (even when the pixels on the screen are so dark to the eye as to appear to all be just black) than it has to do with resolution.

The Vivotek has really fantastic night vision with no IR LED illumination. I don't understand why Sighthound doesn't work in that scenario.

Hi camera_kat,

It's hard to tell why this is happening without knowing how your scene looks. If you could send us a screenshot or video of one of the scene at night we may be able to give some advice on why this is happening.

Regards,

-Devin
