Writing to SSD or SATA

by flynreelow » Sat Feb 21, 2015 6:30 pm

Currently I am recording on motion, and recording this to an SSD. Should I be recording this to a SATA drive instead? Is the wear and tear of writing to the SSD going to hurt it in the long run?

Hi flynreelow,

Depending on the what kind of SSD you have and how much video you are recording daily, you may want to consider using a SATA if you are concerned with the lifespan of your SSD. Modern SSD's can write a fairly large amount of data in their life, though if you have a large camera setup that is recording 24/7 the data usage can certainly add up.

Sighthound records all of the streams from all of the cameras full time. It does not just record on motion. IT RECORDS ALL THE TIME. This is a LOT OF DATA. It then processes image analysis after the fact. If writing to an SSD you WILL seriously impact its lifespan.
