SH and Smartthings (Home Automation)

by jbeletti » Fri Nov 28, 2014 10:25 am

Are there any SH users that are also using some sort of Home Automation?

I'm using http://www.Smartthings.com as my Home Automation platform. They use a "cloud first" strategy for their platform. As such, they can cloud connect with many disparate systems/services.

I am not sure of the API status of SH and whether it's available and open. If it is, perhaps it can interoperate with Smartthings at the cloud level.

Until then, as a work-around and as a test, I have successfully used www.IFTTT.com to turn a light on when motion is detected. I did this using the an "if GMAIL, then SMARTTHINGS" recipe. In the GMAIL portion, I used the Gmail search term "subject:Sighthound Video alert".

So, this works but I'm not able to turn the light back off. What would be cool is to flash the light.

Hi Jim,

We'd definitely like to have a public API in the future. In the meantime we are exploring routes to more easily with other services.

As you're inquiring about API/SDKs, I assume you're familiar with some form of programming or scripting. You may want to take a look at the "Run command" response, that would be able to execute an application or script each time a given rule is triggered. That response type combined with a simple script to execute the 'on' and 'off' repeatedly with a bit of sleeping in between sounds like it would accomplish your flashing light scenario.

Best,
- ryan

I second this. It would be nice to IF 'I'm not home' then send notifications on motion. I
