Mobile App: Video vs. Image Stream.

by AlKoch » Mon Nov 10, 2014 12:46 pm

Hi,

I just installed the Mobile app on a tablet. Once I logged in it came up but when I tried to access a camera there was a delay of several minutes and then it displayed the message "Camera stream could not be loaded. Would you like to try an image steam?".

A couple of questions:

1) What does this message mean - what is an "image stream" and how does it compare to the "video stream"?
2) It is interesting that I am using identical cameras and I can view a camera that is "furthest away" from the router (and occasionally shows "garbled" video) without this error but the camera that is closest is giving me this error. (Or are all the cameras in "image" mode once the 1st one started using that mode?) What causes this error, why one camera and not the other and how can I avoid it?
3) After selecting image stream on the 1st camera I did get a lower quality view of a location. How can I return to video stream to "try again"?

Thank you.

Hi Alkoch,

1) The image stream is an alternate streaming option for those with devices that do not support HLS. It's simply a stream of images rather than full video.

2) The mobile app receives the video streams and clips directly from the Sighthound application and not the cameras, so their distance to the router shouldn't make a difference unless you are experiencing the same dropped connections in the desktop application.

3) You can toggle this option on and off in the Settings menu

Where is the setting to toggle this, in the server or on the ios app? I cannot seem to find it and am having problems with the video stream on the phone.

Hi ryanjmclaughlin,

Tap the icon with three horizontal bars in the upper left corner of the screen, or swipe the screen to the right to open the menu which contains a button for the settings. Please see https://www.sighthound.com/support/mobi ... id-and-ios for more details on navigating our mobile app.

I checked the settings menu, but there is no option for specifying video vs image stream...

Hi ryanjmclaughlin,

Are you using an Android or iOS device? We only added this alternate streaming option to the Android version because some Android devices do not support HLS.

Hi ryanjmclaughlin,

The image stream is not in the iOS app because HLS is support on all of the latest iOS devices. If you are having troubles viewing your streaming video and clips on your iOS device we'd be happy to assist you.
