External storage

by dradb » Fri Oct 10, 2014 5:02 pm

What is the best way to set up external (off site) backup storage? Only the last week's data is needed.

Can google drive (15BG) be used?

Can old data be automatically deleted?

From a security viewpoint, backup storage would allow capture of an intruder if my PC was stolen or destroyed.

I am using Google Drive with no issues right now. I have it set up through actions to store images to my Google Drive that get uploaded automatically offsite and I can access the pics from any computer with internet access and open them. It is working well so far. You can purchase 100GB of storage for 1.99 per month or 1TB storage for 9.99 monthly if you need more space.

Hello dradb,

Both Google Drive and Dropbox have been reported to work well. Keep in mind that in some cases the amount of storage space needed can widely vary day to day depending on the number of cameras, the resolution you are using and your scenes. For example, if you have a camera pointing out to your backyard there may be days where no one goes back there but if you have a BBQ with a bunch of friends you will receive a large amount of clips.

You can get a rough estimate of the amount of space needed by using the "export to a local folder" feature (https://www.sighthound.com/support/export-local-folder) and see how much space is used at the end of the week.

I'm unsure of which, if any, cloud services offer automatic file management. A quick search turned up some file management programs that may solve this issue for you. We haven't verified this at all but here is an example of such a program: http://lifehacker.com/5097718/auto-dele ... rive-clean If you are technically inclined you could write a script to delete files older than X days, or find one that someone else has written.

I hope that helps,

-Devin

Thanks Devin, ahallada

I did find one free FTP site, Lokad. It works well for auto backup but is only 1 GB.

I eventually got google drive working automatically. Much more storage but seems slower.
