Multiple stream support

by sperrywilliamc » Tue Sep 30, 2014 2:18 pm

All my cameras, even the cheap $120 ones are IP POE with multiple stream support. You could set one stream with 800x600 at 15fps for video analysis, and set another stream for 720p at 30fps for recording. Use the first only for analysis and the 2nd for retrieval when needed. Basically keep high quality video to review and export, but save overhead on CPU by setting exact analysis needs for Sighthound on another stream. One camera has support for 4 streams and other streams could be set for remote view over a cell phone and again reduce CPU needs and provide a fair quality video.

Hi sperrywilliamc,

Thanks for the suggestions! Performing analytics on a second smaller stream is an interesting idea, though it unfortunately wouldn't generally work for a couple reasons. Decoding video is a very CPU intensive operation, and pulling in a second stream would ultimately increase the CPU use rather than decreasing. A second stream likely produces different frames as well, so analytics performed there would not directly match the video recorded by the first.

Best,
