4:3 versus 16:9 Aspect ratio?

by sighthoundian » Thu Sep 25, 2014 1:54 pm

Hello,
I was wondering if Sighthound supports a 16:9 ratio on the video (live and recorded)? Right now it looks like I only get a 4:3 box. But my IP camera came with an iPad software and on my the iPad I see a 16:9 aspect ratio. But I don't see this in Sighthound on the Mac computer or the Sighthound video iPad App. Its like the right hand side of the camera capture is cut off. So what I'm trying to say is that my camera is capable of showing more area than what is seen in the Sighthound program or App.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Ian,

In both the Monitor View and the Search View you can resize the video window (and entire application frame) to be whatever size you would like. Within whatever size is available for the video window Sighthound Video will always make the image as large as possible and preserve the aspect ratio of the source.

Note - rereading I see you mention ipad. That window is obviously a fixed size, but the aspect ratio preservation should be preserved. The ipad does have some doubletap behaviors that will zoom to fill, which can cut off edges however.

Best,
- ryan

Hi Ryan,
Yes I see how you can change the size of the application window but even if I make it as large as possible I don't see what my camera is capable of seeing. I have some screen shots of Sighthound Video App and the App that came with my camera showing the different aspect ratios. It looks like Sighthound "chops" off the right hand side of the video. Note the camera webpage view also shows the same view as what sighthound shows. Its just on my iPad I can see the larger view (only with the camera App not with the Sighthound video App).
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. :)

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the screenshots. It is likely that Sighthound Video is connecting to a different stream than the other software, and that the streams are configured on your camera for different resolutions. Many cameras support sending different aspect ratio streams, and they necessarily use a different portion of the camera sensor to generate the images in each case. If you'd like to submit a bug report from Sighthound Video at "Help->Report a Problem" I can tell you which URL is being connected to, you should see the same image as Sighthound Video when connecting to that from any software such as VLC or Quicktime. To see a different aspect ratio scene in Sighthound Video you'd either need to switch SV to use the URL your other software is, or to edit the configuration on the camera to set that stream to a different resolution.

Best,
