Need Help Advice

by cliffilowe » Sun Sep 21, 2014 1:39 am

Hi I am looking for some help and advice on a project to help my parents out.
My parents would like me to monitor there house when they are away but they are not technology savvy. I need a camera that I can just send them to plug into their router and it would some how find its way back to my server so that I can see what's going on and motion would be recorded by my server. is there such a camera that I can program to route back to my server and secondly I am assuming that the sight hound will have no problem recording any motion from the routed camera.

Hi cliffilowe,

You certainly can view a camera at your parents house using Sighthound Video but will first need to set up port forwarding for the camera on their router. The following website has a list of routers with directions on how to port forward for each: http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... rindex.htm

You will likely want to set up port forwarding for both the camera's configuration page and the camera's stream. If you provide the manufacturer and model number of the camera I can provide more specific directions on how to do this.

For more details on using Sighthound Video to monitor a remote location, please see this article: https://www.sighthound.com/support/sett ... econd-home

You could also use GoToMyPC which would give you full access to their computer and router. I've used this to turn Sighthound cams on and off and view video from a remote location. Works good and I think there is a free version available now.

Thansk for your replies.. However as i mentioned i do not want to do any port forwarding on their router or touch their pc. My vision is that i can just send them a camera that they plug into their router ( which have some sort of a reverse VPN ) and it routes back to my server.

Sounds like you need something like Dropcam or the Samsung Smartcam Pro HD where the information is uploaded to an offsite server and you can access the feed from anywhere.

Most of your software programs like SH require port forwarding to perform remote viewing.
