Question before I purchase your software and gear!

by gh0stid » Wed Aug 27, 2014 12:02 pm

Hello everyone.. first of all, sorry for such an easy question for veteran like you ...

before I purchase SightHound Pro ( wich i .. have HIGH hope to fix my actual setup problem ... ) I would like to know if THIS

http://www.ambery.com/4usbquviredv.html

will work with it ?
I plan to use a laptop I dont use with the CCTV camera that originaly came with a Swann DVR ( wich ... sorry to say . SUCK, the motion detection feature are... well retarded ) anyway ...

Would you be kind enought to lemme know if it will work \ if not.. point me in the direction of a 4 or more channel encoder you know that will ?

Switching to IP camera will be too expensive.. same thing for bnc to ip converter...

It would depend on whether the cameras were exposed as separate native USB cameras to the OS or not, though given the remote and software included I would guess it is instead a proprietary communication method. If you can get one to try it's easy enough to find out, but I'm guessing that may not be an option.

I don't have any specific encoder recommendations, and I especially hesitate to offer anything with an overly low price tag as they are typically low cost for a reason. That being said, the Grandstream GXV3504 IP is a 4 channel IP encoder that can be had for ~$100 and one user reported being happy with, but I have no personal experience with the device, it's interface/stability/quality/etc...

thanks for the prompt reply !

really apreciated also the suggestion of a 4ch IP encoders..

may I ask a little more about it ? honestly .. that would be epic!

4ch IP encoders. mean .. i can connect all four of my NON-IP camera to it. get 4 INDIVIDUAL IP ADRESS for each of em, and THEN add it to sighthound Pro ?

really . IF its true.. you sir, are a day saver !

Yup, an IP encoder turns takes analog cameras, encodes their data into a digital stream (typically MJPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264), and then exposes that over some IP interface. Rather than separate IP addresses they typically have different URL targets, http://ip/stream1, http://ip/stream2, and so on. Number of cameras supported, encoding types, options, connection interface, stability, and others will all vary model to model, so I'd encourage you to seek out reviews for anything you look at.

awsome, do you know about Axis 2100 4ch video encoders ? any better than grandstream according to your knownledge or experience ?

I dont mind at all spending lets say ~200$ as long it WORKS.

just so you know...

I plan to buy BNC splitter. connect one section to my Swann DVR record 24x7 and use SightHound only to manage ALERT triggers... so .. in fact the only thing i need to get working .. is the camera that came with the Swann DVR bundle, with sighthound. once done.. ill be more than happy with my setup.

Thank you again for your time. . . really apreciated.

Axis makes fantastic hardware, but I believe the 2100 and 2400 models are over a decade old so I doubt they are a good option. The 241Q is one of their more modern encoders which are great, but you won't get for $200.

grandstream it is then ;)

thank you ! ( wont be able to put ~1100$ for a new axis hehe.. )

used 2100 4ch encoders are going for ~200 on ebay. wich is decent for me. but .. the new version is wayyyyy too expensive for me!
