Not an problem - if I understand how the app works, the app does not need to remain open to record, but you must launch the app (such as at startup) to start the recording. Correct?
Right now I have the app as part of the startup items, but I'm wondering if that is superfluous.

You can certainly close the user interface (visible portion) of the application and background processes will continue to run as long as a camera is enabled. You do need to launch the app (such as on startup), though we hope to offer running the application as a service in the future.

OK, thanks. In the absence of having immediately quit after launch, I'll just select the "hide" option in login items. Quitting is still better, of course, because it's one fewer process, saving CPU cycles.
