Rules and alerts seem to stop working

by Holmium » Fri Jul 25, 2014 6:56 pm

I've been using VitaminD / Sighthound for a number of years and this problem has just started in the last few weeks (perhaps after the last update)?

The issue is video records from my two cameras but there's no alerts. The video is being recorded, as I can see the video from the whole day when I click on search at the top, then select one of the two cameras. Both cameras have this issue. If I restart the PC, it works fine for that day, then stops working over night. If I turn off the cameras via the red button at the top and then shutdown the app, followed by starting sighthound again and pressing turn on, it will work for the rest of the day. The next day, no alerts.

Runing Win 7x64. Sighthound version 2.2 build 14470.

Is there a command I can enter to tell it to shutdown all cameras and close the app gracefully, then another to start the app and turn on the cameras? If so, I could schedule a task early in the morning each day to restart the service and this should do it.

Or perhaps to rollback to a version to the one prior to this?

I use this as a home security system, so I'd like to be able to leave it running without manually having to restart these processes each day.

Can you elaborate on what you mean when you say there are no 'alerts'? It sounds like perhaps you have a rule response such as email set up, and stop receiving them despite the clips being listed correctly in the search view?

We aren't aware of any outstanding issues of that nature. Can you submit a bug report from within the application by selecting "Help->Report a problem", or manually zip and email us the logs directory from sighthound.com/support/where-does-sighthound-store-data

We'd be glad to see if anything is going wrong internal to the application.

Hi there,

Happy to elaborate and have sent the problem via Sighthound.

So, I have one rule running for each camera. One is set to any object, during a certain period of the day. It will then copy the file to a network share (which is a onedrive folder) and this will upload to Onedrive. I then would check the videos when I'm at work. They'll often be of the cats entering/leaving the house or family members coming home at lunch or leaving late etc. I first noticed this problem that there would be no videos from either camera. I would typically get 20 - 40 a day. At first, I checked for the usual things like if onedrive is working, network shares working, etc. But they were/are. Eventually, after turning off the cameras and restarting the app, and turning the cameras back on, the alerts would work straight away.

So, the way I'd check if alerts were working, is I'd goto search at the top and select a camera. In the bottom right, I'd see a green bar representing the video cache for the day. I'd expect to see multiple blue/black lines throughout this bar to represent alerts.

It's like it's not reading the events on the video?

I've attached an example from yesterday (Fri) and last tuesday. Even though there's no video cache on Tue, you can see the alerts.

That's really odd, I haven't heard of any trouble like this in the history of the app so I'm afraid I don't have a quick suggestion offhand. I'm sure you do, but I have to ask anyway that you have the correct rule selected?

I'm afraid the logs included with a bug report only contain a segment of the most recent data. Nothing appeared odd in them, and I'm guessing the trouble isn't occurring for you now. Would it be possible for you to email a compressed version of the entire logs directory to support? Or to file a bug report after you see this behavior occurring?

Around the time this began happening have you made any changes to your computer that you can recall, installing new software, hardware, big settings changes, etc...

I was thinking I could reinstall the software, I'd just prefer not to setup the rules/alerts again. Anyway to export them?

Uninstalling and re-installing the software does not touch the data directory so your settings/video/etc... would all be preserved.

Thanks, I've unistalled, restarted and reinstalled from a slightly older version, 2.1 build 14089. Will give this a go and if it works, will upgrade to the latest version and provide an update.

Cheers.

The older version worked fine. After upgrading to the new version, the same issue reoccured. Records video but no rules/alerts seem to trigger. Would you mind letting me know where the log folder is? I've looked in the sighthound folder, couldn't see anything obvious?

Yup, we'd be happy to take a look at them -
