Windows version works fine, Mac version doesn't

by tomschenkenberg » Thu Jul 24, 2014 10:05 am

Hi there!

I'm trying to get Sighthound (evaluation copy) working on my Mac (10.9.4), but it doesn't connect to my Foscam FI9805W. So I tried install on Windows. The same connection settings on Windows do work fine.

Settings:
Camera type: FI9818W

I've tried:
- Rebooting Mac
- Resetting camera, firmware upgrade, various settings
- Different Mac (10.7.5)

And here's the weird part: it briefly worked on the Mac the first try. I have no clue what changed and causing it to no connect to the camera on the Mac.

What else could I try to get things working on the Mac?

Thanks!
Tom

Hi Tom,

Is the Mac still on the same network? Perhaps it hopped wifi networks. If you'd like to file a bug report from within the app by visiting "Help->Report a Problem" we can see if anything internal to the application is behaving oddly. Can you connect to the camera's IP properly from a browser on that machine?

Hi,
Thanks for your quick response. I just got back home.

The camera and Mac are on the same WIFI network. I've just filed a bug report, so I'm hoping you can see what's wrong.

I can connect to the camera (and see the live feed) by browsing the Foscam camera webserver and installing the Safari plug-in.

Also, I'm sure that my choice of Foscam isn't helping matters. Sorry about that. You get what you pay for I guess :) So I'm even prepared to return the Foscam's and exchange them with ones that are SH certified :)

Thanks,
Tom

I've been emailing with support about this problem. It didn't lead to a solution. So I tried some more things and just now found the source of the problem:

The password on the Mac version does not accept '-' (dashes) in the password! My (auto-generated by 1Password) password had several dashes in them, which apparently the Mac version of SH didn't pass through the camera, so the authentication failed.

I've changed it so something simple without dashes, and boom: it worked!

Amazing :)

Tom

Hi Tom,

I'm investigating this on OSX 10.9 and I'm afraid I haven't been able to reproduce it. I've created a number of passwords with '-' at the beginning, middle, or end and am able to successfully connect each time. If you have any other insight into this I'd be happy to try to figure out what may have occurred. Particularly interesting would be if you could send me the old autogenerated password if you're no longer using it.

Hi,

The non-working admin password was: od-gak-jok-ji

I found out by creating a new account, username view and pasword 'view', and trying connecting with that. And then I changed the admin password by removing all the dashes, and then I could login with the admin account as well.
