Hi MarkS,
Please see our article What camera's can I use? http://www.sighthound.com/support/what-cameras-can-i-use for a description of the options that are out there.

You can use Sighthound Video with virtually any IP camera that exposes it's stream path as well as USB cameras; no additional hardware or DVR's are required.

In regards to your link, purchasing a DVR system is not ideal as Sighthound Video will be saving video on your machine. Also, if the DVR does not have an encoder built in you will need to purchase one for the analog cameras that come with the system. I'd recommend taking a look at the IP cameras listed in the link above, as those will not require any encoders or other recording systems.

I did read the article but as I don't know anything about this stuff it was confusing - I started to look on eBay not to buy but just to see what I needed . And tried looking for some of the part numbers on your list so I can check out the specs and know more about this stuff.
Are you suggesting anything with RCA or BNC connections us analogue and USB is what I'm looking for?
If I buy a PC with a 8 channel capture card is this ok ??
As you can see I am really a noob

Hi Mark,

If you haven't seen it this article contains more detail about the difference between local cameras (USB, analog over a capture card) and IP cameras: http://www.sighthound.com/support/what- ... ould-i-get

Your computer can only handle so many USB cameras at once (due to power and data bandwidth) and these need to be near your computer. IP cameras will let you locate the cameras around your premises anywhere you can have an ethernet or wifi signal.

I think I understand, I have a friend helping me and we are in the process of selecting some cameras

we are looking at the ONVIF 1280*720P HD 1.0MP
(With regards to cameras is it better to have a 3.6mm (70deg) view or a 6mm (50deg) view which is better to capture specified 'events' like People

I don't know if these have an exposed video stream (not sure how I can tell)
we have also bought an 8-port Gigabit Router to connect the cameras into. (My thinking ist better to hardwire then wifi / wireless - Is this correct)

I heard the term "Hyperthreading" (what ever that is) is it better.. it was thrown into a coversation and I just smilled and nodded wisely..

Hi Mark,

Hyperthreading is a feature of some processors. For comparing CPU performance I would recommend checking http://www.cpubenchmark.net

ONVIF isn't a brand, but rather a standard. If you can't locate the manufacturer of the camera it might not be the best purchase, as you may never be able to adequately receive any support if needed.

Field of view will mostly come down to your scene and preference, you don't need to worry about the application's algorithms.

Wired connections are great if you can manage, but for some people it can be difficult to run cables to all the locations they would like to put cameras.
