reading license plates

by barrypilger » Thu May 29, 2014 10:20 am

I am wondering if Sighthound staff is aware of anyone using this software to monitor vehicles with an eye to reading license plates. Not OCR, but just getting a clear picture of a license plate as a vehicle drives by. I have an analog system that does this in 960h resolution. We have found that a camera with a manually adjustable lens (focus and zoom) are required. It seems to me the software is suited to such an application, just wondering if anyone is doing it and what camera(s) they are using. (The cars we want to capture are going no more than 30 mph.)

I'm not offhand, though we can certainly read license plates looking out of our window on some of our cameras - depends greatly on position, resolution, and camera quality.

Thanks Ryan. There is a tremendous need for this in communities with higher crime rates. Most solutions are commercial and very expensive. I'm thinking Sighthound with the right 1080p camera would do the trick. I'll do some experimenting and will keep you posted.

Hi barrypilger,

Can you perhaps provide us with an update on your endeavors?

We also live in a community where crime is a problem, so we have a WhatsApp group where we are notified to be on the lookout for e.g. a Red BMW with registration ABC123.

At the moment I don't think we get a clear enough picture for number plate recognition, but with the SH API I think we are not very far from a solution where the system can at least let us know that a Red car has just passed the camera.
