USB camera - selecting MJPG pin and missing resolutions

by buzzdev » Sun May 25, 2014 4:37 pm

Hello,
could you please advice me, how to select MJPG pin from a local USB camera instead of YUY2?

Also, some of the available resolutions are not listed, at the camera setup screen. For example 640x360 or 1024x576 are missing.

These are all my cam's resolutions:
res_select01.jpg
Available resolutions
res_select01.jpg (54.63 KiB) Viewed 1962 times

But only few are available in Camera Setup screen:
res_select02.jpg
SH resolutions
(77.87 KiB) Downloaded 394 times

Thanx

Is there a particular reason you are concerned with what colorspace/format Sighthound Video pulls frames from your USB camera? There is no colorspace selection at the moment, and there should be no difference to the software or the end result whichever is used.

The value you are seeing in the drop down list is what resolution the video will be saved at, not acquired at. The aspect ratio will never be changed, and the closest supported resolution provided by your camera will be used. For example, if you select 1024x768, the software will pull 1024x576 from the camera and also save to disk at 1024x576.

Hi Ryan,
thanx for quick reply.

The reason for being able to select chroma/pin is that with MJPG i have much better framerates than YUY2 (at least on my cam).
By good lighting conditions, this doesn't matter that much, as almost all resolutions are not less than 20fps. However in the dark, the camera delivers faster frames with MJPG.

For example in the dark conditions with 24W IR ArrayLED illuminator:
YUY2 1080p@5fps
YUY2 720p@8fps
YUY2 640x360@11fps

MJPG 1080p@8fps
MJPG 720p@15fps
MJPG 576p@22fps
MJPG 360p@30fps

For now i workaround this SH limitation with iSpyServer or i use another linux computer to stream the camera, so i can select correct resolution and pin/chroma/format.

It would be really great, if you could please implement that selection in SH.

The resolutions in SH are not as you have described it.
When i choose 1024x768 i really get that resolution on preview and also on recorded/exported video. I'd like to use 1024x576 (16:9) as that is a good compromise between resolution, framerate and it fits the visible situation better.

Couldn't you just enumerate all the caps that are available from the camera instead of that hardcoded reso list?

Thank you for support
Martin

BTW: As the SH is mostly written in python, is there any possibility/plan to port it to linux?

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the additional information. On the topic of linux, a port is definitely something that we would love to have. Unfortunately up to this point the economics haven't worked out such that we can allocate resources to it, but particularly as we explore an enterprise solution a linux offering will likely be a higher priority.

Best,
- ryan

Hi Ryan,
That sounds promising for the linux world. Count me in...

How about my actual problem - selecting the mjpg pin and resolutions? :)

Thanx
M

Hi Martin,

I've added it to our feature request list for future consideration.
