Reliably Record/Always Record

by arktik » Fri May 16, 2014 3:43 am

Hey there,

I am setting up two cameras for my church office and since they see the public on a usual basis we want to make sure that if anything happens we have it on video. I downloaded this software and it seems to work great so far. Here is my concern:

Originally I was looking for a software solution that would just simply record non stop all day. However that seemed inefficient so Sighthound seemed like a great idea. If it truly is set to any object (the default) this should mean it should reliably record everything when anything in the camera is moving correct? So even though we are in and out of office from 10 am until 5 pm, and sometimes as late as 9 pm, it'l just record all that moves (even if it turns out to be a lot of recording, i did give it 500 GBs of space).

I just want to make sure that it will reliably record. I don't want something to happen and then when I go back to see, it's not there. Or that because of so much movement happening for long hours it stops recording or something.

And lets assume the above concern couldn't get addressed fully, does anyone know a good IP camera software that would just simply record for the last 72 hours or so and just delete the oldest recordings? Or record until the allotted amount of disk space was used and then delete d the oldest recordings? And if i go that route instead of sighthound, one that would record audio as well. I read on the forums that that feature is sadly not included yet.

Thanks for your input!!

As a long time user of this software, I think it is THE ideal solution for you. It does record ALL video to the harddrive, motion or no motion, and you can review it with only a little bit of understanding of the Review mode of the program. It also marks in a database the time of ANY motion detected, and gives you a list of these clips of video for you to quickly review them. Then goes one step further in allowing you to set "Rules" that mark certain clips of video as being of particular interest because the motion was of a certain size, shape, location or direction, and you can very quickly review them for events of interest.

The program allows you to set a time frame for how long to keep all this video within the limits of how much disk space is available to store it.

It first deletes the video where no motion was detected, then it deletes video where motion was detected but you did not set a rule to keep it longer, then eventually it may have to delete even the rule based keeper video.

Once you reach the space limit the oldest data gets deleted to make room for new. At 500GB and 2 cameras running at a decent resolution you will have MONTHS worth of video on the drive for you to review at your leisure.

From my understanding of what you want, I don't think you will even need to define a rule at all. Just let it record everything and if something happens that you want to investigate, go to the Review mode and select the day of interest and scan through the list of clips where motion was detected and view those of interest.

If something happens that you need to keep "forever" you can export the clip to a USB memory device or CD/DVD as needed.

Thanks for those amazing replies! I am loving sighthound now. I just wish it would record audio as well. Other than that I think this does meet our needs perfectly.

Thanks again!
