Record while something/someone is in bounding box.

by mamilewski » Mon Apr 28, 2014 6:46 pm

Can anyone explain why the software keeps recording the camera even though there is nothing within the bounding box? How do I just have recording start the moment something enters the bounding box? Is there something else selected that I missed?

Sighthound Video records all data for some amount of time, then persists only the clips matching rules with the save response. More detail can be found here:

If you are having a problem with rules specifically you'll need to elaborate, but these links might help get you started:

I'm having the same problem. In the Managing Your Video section it reads, "Each clip starts five seconds before the event that triggers the rule (e.g., person crossing a boundary), and ends ten seconds after." But for me, it's recording from when I turn it on to when I turn it off.

You are confusing a "CLIP" with the raw video... ALL video is recorded to the harddisk and is viewable for the amount of time you have set in the program setup (I think the default is 2 days, if you don't change it). At that point all the data is deleted UNLESS it matches a rule. The data for 5 seconds before motion is detected is kept and for an additional 10 seconds after that and all the rest is deleted. (There are circumstances where it saves a longer clip based on the number of objects/people detected moving, and maybe some other things.)

When you are reviewing a days worth of video, you will see EVERYTHING if the day being reviewed is just yesterday or today (per the program setting referred to above). After that period, you will only see the "CLIPS" that were saved by a rule.

If you want to see only the clips saved by a rule, then you must select each rule individually in the list at the top. Then only the videos with motion that fits the rule criteria will be listed in the video list.

I do wish that the "whole" list would list the rule based videos a bit differently.

Right now, if a clip has both rule based saving status and a portion has "just being kept for 2 days" video in it, then the list shows that it is "Not saved by a rule", even though a portion of it WILL be saved.

At a minimum it should either,

1) split that segment into the non-rule parts and the "Saved by a rule" part, or

2) have a different tag line (that is easily recognized as different than "Not saved by a rule") so that I can view ALL cameras and ALL rules in one contiguous list and still easily see which parts of the day's collection of video was marked as saved by rule.

As it is now, I miss "rule based detected motion" in the list because the tag line indicates that the segment is "Not saved by a rule" (because a portion of that segment was not saved by a rule). With multiple cameras with overlapping views and multiple rules, I have to select one rule at a time to see if there is any motion saved by a rule and that takes extra time to do. AND, I cannot quickly switch to another camera to see additional video that might be relevant to what is happening in the scene of the 1st camera.
