Good local server for a webcam on another computer? (MAC)

by hoeschjp » Sun Mar 30, 2014 4:17 pm

The webcam on my Mac Mini has a great view of 2 of 3 main entry points to my house. I want to run Sighthound on the computer upstairs however (where I also want to use that computer's webcam), and was wondering if anyone knew of a good way to serve up that webcam locally so that Sighthound can see it.

Any ideas?

I haven't done this personally, but I believe you should be able to use the open source software VLC to do this - in addition to file playback it can both capture from local devices and broadcast streams over the network. You can download it from https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

A quick google search turned up a few articles about doing this, they both mention windows specifically, but I imagine the information should apply to OSX as well.
