Remote acces

by lucamotoc » Sun Sep 29, 2013 3:07 am

If I have a camera connected to my PC and I go away, with Vitamin D installed on my phone who can I see that camera without knowing the IP?

Hi Luca,

Vitamin D Video does not have remote access. There is a brand new early release of this functionality in the new beta (which is known as Sighthound Video), downloadable at http://sighthoundlabs.com/download - note that you will need to know your home IP, and that features and functionality will be rapidly coming in over the coming weeks.

So, the feature will be coming to Vitamin D in less than 1 month? How do I learn my IP address? How do I turn on remote access?

Hi Lucamotoc,

According to another posting, the newer features are in the new release, which is called SightHound. If we want those newer features we'll have to pay an upgrade price (though some recent purchasers might get it for free or at a discount). As for me, I'm looking forward to what they'll be doing with the upgrade.

In order to know your home IP address, you have 2 options, only one of which is good. You can go to someplace like http://whatismyip.com to find out what your IP address is at the moment. However, depending on your ISP, that can change at any time (mine seems to stay the same for days and weeks at a time). The better way to do it is with a dynamic DNS address. It's not super easy to set up, but what you end up with is a DNS entry to get to your home, and it will keep track when your IP address changes. For instance, once it's set up, you could have lucamotoc.homeip.net as your DNS entry, and it'll always get to your home, no matter how often your ISP changes the actual underlying IP address. Details on how to set that up are at http://dyn.com/dns/ in the "DynDNS Remote Access" area. That service is $25/year. There are some free DNS providers, but I've never used them.

Remote access is a brand new beta feature, and something that will be rapidly improving over the coming weeks as we push to remove the beta tag. We will be posting detailed guides soon, but in the meantime here is a quick setup overview -

1) Open Sighthound Video
2) Select "Sighthound Video->Preferences" on mac, "Tools->Options" on windows
3) Click the "Remote Access" tab
4) Check the "enable remote access" box, add a username and password, and select a port
5) Click OK, remote access should now be enabled

To test, on the same computer, open a web browser and go to "http://localhost:<port>", by default this would be "http://localhost:8080"

To access from a different computer or browser on your local network you will need to know the IP of that computer on your local network. Here is a document that describes how to find that on various operating systems: http://kb.iu.edu/data/aapa.html

To access from outside your network you will need to configure your router forward a port to the configured port on the configured machine. You can then access from outside your network by going to your public IP (see http://www.whatsmyip.org/) and the port you configured on your router.

Hope that helps,
- ryan
