Network Bandwidth Issue?

by armyturtle » Sat Aug 24, 2013 1:12 pm

Hi,
I haven't confirmed this but wanted to pose it as a question here to see if anyone else has seen this issue. First of all, not all legs of my network are Gigabit.
I have the Pro Edition VDV and I am currently running 6 cameras.
I added a 720p camera yesterday (my sixth) and have noticed the other cameras having choppy video on occasion.
My computer has 64 GB of RAM, runs Windows 7 Pro 64bit, has 2 video cards http://goo.gl/hwUHau running 3 monitors.

Anyone else seen the point at which choppy video (appears to freeze for 2-3 seconds in the recorded stream) takes place?
Any other suggestions besides upping all legs of my network to Gigabit?

Thank you in advance!

I don't think that any one of your cameras is using anywhere near Gigabit speeds - it's more likely that you have multiple switches cascaded (switch plugged into a switch), and that alone is adding "network lag" or your inter-switch links are congested with other network traffic.

You might be able to improve this by any of the following:
- ensuring your inter-switch links are all gigabit
- using a separate VLAN and QoS policy just for the VDV to camera traffic
- using a dedicated switch just for the VDV to camera connections

I have VDV installed where there is only 10/100 switches and 5 cameras, no lag. At another site where there was three switches cascaded before reaching the camera, I had the lag problem where VDV would put the yellow exclamation mark up - I fixed this by ensuring all cameras were on the same switch as the VDV server.

These products may be helpful in eliminating cascading switches when the camera is further than the 328 feet distance limitation of Ethernet... http://www.veracityglobal.com/products/ ... nsion.aspx

A couple non-network related possibilities -

* Do you have a decent amount of free CPU? It is possible that if your CPU maxes out due to a virus scanner or something starting up and crunching away that one or more of the camera processes is temporarily starved. Depending on the incoming video format that pause could then be propagated in the video output (MJPEG for example).
* There could be an issue with the camera - some cameras might have a hiccup after continuously sending a video stream for so long, either a bug in the code, or they need to pause to clear out or reset some buffer, etc...
