Recording of sound??

by mslystad » Fri Apr 05, 2013 12:45 pm

I wonder if it is possible to record sound with the video-clips?
I have a D-Link IP camera which is 'recording' very good sound.... I find it strange that there is no sound on the video...

Hope anybody can give me a tip on how to being able to record video with sound :o

Hiya, VDV does not currently support sound recording.

Don't hold your breath... I (and MANY MANY others) have been asking for this most basic feature for YEARS. I believe it has more to do with the developers not wanting to wade into the waters of recording audio being illegal in some jurisdictions - which is absolutely ridiculous and akin to gun/ammunition manufacturers not wanting to make bullets because they could be used to commit murder.

The ONLY reason I spent $200 on a full license is because Vitamin D works so well. If I could find something better that recorded audio, I'd switch in a heartbeat (there are plenty of others that DO record audio as well - but VItaminD trumps most of them).

"VitaminD does not currently support audio recording" - pathetic... As in ALL of your posted answers to this, you NEVER elaborate.

Hi armyturtle,

I have never said anything about not adding audio recording because it is illegal in certain jurisdictions. Audio is something we would love to have in the product, as I understand you would as well. At the moment, however, there are numerous other features and functionality that are requested an order of magnitude more than audio and I am placing priority on those.

I thank you for your support. I apologize that the current lack of certain functionality is frustrating for you. I would certainly love for VDV to be everything for everybody and am working toward this.

That is great to hear Ryan, I think we get a little frustrated because Vitamin D is so good (best on the market in my view) that a few extra features (iPhone app ect) would make it outstanding.

Man that's a bummer. I just bought the 2 camera license and I just assumed it had sound without actually checking. +1 to see this make it in as a feature soon.

Ryan,
I'm glad to see you actually responded to a post regarding audio recording by me other than deleting it. (I posted before about this, with no vulgarity or offense and it mysteriously disappeared - 3+ years ago.)

With all your "requested features" I fail to see how audio is anything BUT the top priority. VDV works so well already and I can't imagine what possibly could be a bigger feature to implement than recording audio.

Almost every ip camera out has a microphone & supports audio, for years now; but your software does not. It's utterly shocking.

In fact, if you take a look at your own forum you'll see a post in the "Feature Requests" section that was started by a guy on Nov 28th 2010 asking about this. Also you can tell it's the most desired because the threads views are at 7964! No user-started thread comes even close to the number of views this has. I also have been using your software since at least 2008 and have seen numerous requests since THEN for audio recording. I understand this is a part-time thing for most of you working on it... but 5 years? Come on man. Don't give us the lame excuse that there are other features that have been requested that are a higher priority - specifically without pointing out what exactly could be more highly desired when your own forum shows dramatically different.

Hi armyturtle,

I'd like to first say that to the best of my recollection I've only deleted "double posts" where it is clear a user didn't intend to make the same post twice, and once for inappropriateness. I would never remove a post because it was asking for a feature. I just searched throughout all of the moderator and administrative logs and couldn't find any reference to your username. I'm unsure what happened, but I apologize your post was somehow lost.

The forums represent only a small subset of customer interaction, most of which comes directly to us through email (and unfortunately the hyper inflated view counts here are primarily from google/bing/yahoo web crawlers and spambots). We're working on some exciting things that I believe users, hopefully yourself included, will be thrilled with. I've never said that audio will never be a component of the product, but it is not on the "must have" list for the next version. I can also promise that customer needs and feedback are a huge component of our decision making processes.

Thanks,
- ryan

Hi Ryan,

I'm working with many customers in Canada where the priority no.1 is the communication and how fast we reply with a solution.

Let me tell you that your support is greatly appreciated and keep up your good work !

Do you need instantly indexed sound to go along with your VDV playbacks of the day, or just sound available if an incident ever occurs? If the latter, why not use a separate sound recording application to always record? Sound is fairly small to store as mp3 encodes, and if there ever was an incident, you could find the sound index based on the time that the video was recorded and still have your evidence?
