Gmail setting for Sighthound

by Welshdog » Thu Feb 23, 2017 1:22 pm

I had a devil of a time getting my new Gmail address to work in Sighthound global email settings area of notifications. I was using a long, complex password and could not get it to work. At first I thought I was typing it wrong. Then I thought I had the server port wrong. Then I thought I was using too much information. Eventually Gmail sent me a notice regarding my numerous attempted logins. They mentioned a Gmail setting intended to allow less secure apps to access your account. I found the setting, turned it on and Sighthound immediately connected to Gmail. This setting must be something new, but I wanted to share it so others could avoid these problems.

Here is the Google page describing the function with links to the "Less secure apps section" of your account:

Google warns that this setting makes your mail easier to hack, but wonder if they aren't overstating the risk a bit.
